Material Takeoff

A material takeoff goes one step past a quantity takeoff: instead of "420 linear feet of 2×6," it's "46 pieces of 2×6×10' and 12 pieces of 2×6×16'," grouped the way a supplier actually stocks and sells material.

What it is

Where a quantity takeoff totals raw quantities, a material takeoff converts those quantities into purchasable units — standard lumber lengths, sheet goods by size, pipe by stock length — with waste factored in per material. It's the list you'd hand directly to a lumberyard, supplier or distributor for a quote, not a number you'd need to convert first.

When to ask for this

Ask for a material takeoff when the goal is procurement — getting supplier quotes, placing an order, or building a cut list for the field — rather than pricing a bid. It's the natural next step after a quantity takeoff for anyone buying the material directly.
